This steel shield depicts a cockatrice and has 3 charges. While the shield has at least 1 charge, a layer of stone covers it which grants a +1 bonus to the shield’s Armor Class benefit, raising the total to 3.
While wielding the shield, you can use a reaction to expend 1 charge when a creature makes a melee attack against you. The attacker must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw, becoming restrained for 1 minute on a failure. The target can reattempt the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the restrained condition on itself on a success. Targets are immune to the cockatrice shield’s effects for 24 hours when they succeed on a saving throw.
While wielding the shield, you can also use an action to end the shield’s effects on any number of creatures within 30 feet of you or expend 3 charges to make the shield emit a rooster’s crow. All creatures within 30 feet except yourself who hear the crow must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw with the same results as when you expend 1 charge on a single target.
The shield regains all expended charges at dawn each day.

This steel shield depicts a cockatrice and has a layer of stone that represents 14 temporary Hit Points with Hardness 7. When the shield drops to 0 temporary Hit Points, it emits a bloodcurdling rooster’s crow. All creatures within 30 feet except the shield’s wielder who hear the crow must attempt a DC 27 Fortitude save as a stony shell manifests over their bodies.
- Critical Success The creature is unaffected and temporarily immune to the cockatrice shield’s effects for 24 hours.
- Success The creature is slowed 1 for 1 round.
- Failure The creature is slowed 1 for 1 round and immobilized for 1 round or until it Escapes.
- Critical Failure The creature is slowed 2 for 1 round and immobilized until it Escapes.
If any creature critically fails the save, the shield gains 14 temporary Hit Points immediately. Otherwise, it gains 14 temporary Hit Points during your next daily preparations. The temporary Hit Points last until your next daily preparations.
