Photography is a difficult element. I am not good at it, but there are something’s that I have learned through my old age of 20 something.
Lets start this compressed small guide to miniature photography with your phone!
First lets go through a somewhat proper set up. Light box with a white or dark background and some additional light. Most light boxes let you set the temperature of the light. Try to use the one that is closest to daylight as possible. Then the extra lights need to be the same or as close as possible with the temperature. Light boxes usually let you control the ?shutter?* frequency of the LED strips in them. Change the settings so you don’t get flickering in your photographs and videos.

Now that we have a background set up. We will elevate the model a little bit. Its easier to photograph if its not on the table. We try to take a photo of the miniature without any distractions or weird light shenanigans.
Then we look for the “Golden angle” The view with most to say or shows the models most prominent features. Like the face, weapon, cool magic effect what ever it is we want it into the photograph.

Then open the pro mode of your cameras settings. We don’t want to use the basic mode as it will do colour corrections and try to filter textures away, and thus killing the pictures quality. It will make the miniature look weird or out of focus.

In the pro mode we first want to correct the photo “speed” and ISO. Speed and ISO balances the coming light and so we try to dapple them until the background looks dead black and the miniature is still in light and visible. Try to move the lights so that no cast shadows are formed over the miniature.

Then we choose a place for our camera (or phone in this case). Preferably we place it on a stand, but I don’t have one. So we freehand it. Anyway now the camera is placed. Now we can manually change the focus to the miniature. Try to have the most important things in focus and remember focus is like a plane in the space. It doesn’t have much depth. As we are not layering photos over each other, we cant stack focus. So set up your focus well and then we move on to temperature.

Now that we have the background dead black and miniature in focus. We move to colour correction. Now you need to change the ISO and the temperature setting your camera. Changing ISO will also change your light correction so try to change that as little as possible. Remember to look at your miniature and compare the real thing to the cameras display one. Use as much time here as is needed. This will take a lot of time as you want to present the miniature as it is in its best form!

When all the settings are ready, use the timer 2 seconds or 5 second window to take photos. This stabilises the photo quite a lot. Do this even if you are holding the phone.

Now you can take as many beatiful pictures of your painted miniatures as you want! Lovely isnt it!
Thats all for now! Remember to give your photography skills the time and practice it needs to develop!
