Last week you got a nice big blog, so this week we’re back to short’n’shit (god that’s fucking cringe why did I write that fuck me) content. I actually have a fairly cool blog planned, showcasing a ton of orcs I have been painting for my D&D campaign with their paint recipes. I just have to finish up the last couple of standard orcs and then paint the bosses. Anyway. Here are some D&D cultists from the Wrath of Ashardalon board game I painted several years ago (I wrote this then and never published it too).
Painting these cultists was kind of annoying. They’ve been sitting around for years unpainted, and I had nothing to paint so here they are. This Wrath of Ashardalon box I have has some weird issue with the plastic one these minis specifically; Several sculpts have this weird texture that’s only really noticeable once you’re applied paint. That’s not a bad primer or me not thinning my paint causing all that texture, that’s the sculpts. I have a couple minis from a different Wrath of Ashardalon box that are totally smooth and fine, like all the other D&D Adventure board games (Ravenloft, Drizzt, etc) minis. It’s just this one box. Because of that, it’s the only one of the bunch I have that isn’t entirely painted.
Don’t let this discourage you from buying these games though, like I said it appears to just be this one batch and it annoys me cause otherwise these sculpts would be great, like the rest of the board games are. I highly encourage anyone who plays D&D or just wants a bunch of cheap minis to buy them.
Anyway, the paint job on the cultists isn’t particularly good due to those reasons. I don’t see the point in wrestling with these sculpts to try and make them look good. Even my drybrushing isn’t up to its usual standard on these, as I was just trying to get them finished so I could paint those orcs. Should have used a rounded drybrush on them but couldn’t even be arsed to pull it out as I had a flat one right next to me. But here’s the paint recipes anyway, they’re good for speed painting any classic robed cultist type figure. Note that I used a bunch of weird washes and alternating colours on the robes, to add some colour interest that might distract from the shit sculpts. This is a really good way to make speed painting look interesting.
The cloaks are WAY more vibrant in real life, this photo makes them look so dark and dull for some reason.
