Hello! Fellow orc enthusiests! (Wich I am not but hey, here we are) Its Orctober25 and I was tasked to do a post about orcs. So I desided to do four. Here is the first one. A speedpainting guide for violet orruk with my own style and time frame. I am on a work trip so photos will be a little different from usual and painting maybe not so sharp as the 12 hour shifts of construction take their toll. Atleast the hotel life is nice!
We can stard from a miniature that is primed white or black. Zenithal is not needed. I painted this with a heavy zenithal to help me see the details. But its not necessary if you are in a well lit room. In the pictures I had already started aplying the basecoats. The heat of getting to paint a new model under a time pressure took hold of me and I forgor to take a good picture before starting.
We want block in the colours with opaque layers. You might see some of my testing of the process on the miniatures left side pauldron and orange hand guard. And the start of speedy nmm on the axe. Ignore them for now, please.
I decided to add a tad more of orange behind the orc. So I painted the ass protection piece orange. It also follows an imaginary line over the orc, wich somewhat gives some composition element to this piece. I also decided that the extra pointi bitz at the axe should also be orange. I just felt like they should be.
Next stage is highlighting. Well do it by layering with an old brush. We will apply the paint semi opaqually and by japping the old brush to the area we want highlighted. Try to choose two different sized brushes for this. I used a size 6 and a size 2. At the very last highlights I switched to an old kolinsky brush, that has lost its point a bit. With this size 1 kolinsky we can stipple and edgehighlight things in more of a precise way. We can also darkline some stuff, if we feel the need to do that. This japping technique is very fast and messy. organize your colouring from inward to outward as you can then more easily clean up any mistakes you are going to do. We will apply paint this way for the oranges, violets and the skin. The skin we will also layer normally with a pointy brush to give it more of a smoother look.
I started with the leather parts. Wich I painted with normal layering. And applied a coat of wash only to the boots. trying to make them darker and greener from the pants. I used Bootstap Brown, Dorado Skin and some Burnt Orange to all the leather parts. highlighted them by adding the ochre a little bit and Dorado Skin gradually. For the wash I used thinned down Green Rrey mixed with a tad of Terrestial Titan.
The brighter leather parts are Bootstrap brown+Plum+ Arctic blue. About 4:0,5:4. With a highlight of the original mix and Dorado Skin.
For the chainmail I used Gun Metal base coat, A wash of Green Grey, drybrush of Shining Silver.
Then for the skin. Angel green as my base, I added carefully some dorado skin and just used that this time. When it was time for the final highligh I made a new mix entirely. Angel Green and Arctic Blue this time. To make the last highlights look minty green.
The NMM is just majorly Green Grey and Arctic Blue. I premade five stages for the NMM and just aplied them from darkest to lightest. For the final highlight I pushed the white to be more white. So Matt White with a tad of Arctic Blue was the way to go. Then I glazed the Green Grey from midtone downwards. To give more contrast. Remember to edgehighlight even the blackened parts of the axe, to sell the metallic feel.
For the mouth I mixed Molten Lava And Sacred scarlet… About 1:1 ratio and basecoated the mouth with it. Teeth and all. Then highlighted very small areas and the tongue with Sacred Scarlet. And fixed spill overs with Angel green. And highlighted where necessary.
Then I painted the teeth with a mix of mostly Dorado Skin and a tad of ochre and brown. Highlighted with a mix of white back into my coctail and thats it. I also painted the eyes with this highlight mix and then the dark spot with Green Grey.
Violet parts start with a mixture of Plum And Terrestial Titan. About 1:1. I wanted more of a brighter basetone. Then highlighted with Plum applied by jabbing motion. Then a mix of Plum and Dorado Skin to keep it warmer in tone. About 1:1,5 ratio. Then I aplied a wash of our basecoat mix. And dark lined where needed with pure Terrestial Titan. Last highlights are a mixture of Plum and Arctic blue (1:5) and they are to be quite small. We dont want the cold highlight clour to be overpowering.
Orange parts are a basecoat of Burnt orange, Highlight of Molten lava and Dorado skin (1:1,5-2), Another highlight with Molten Lava, Lava Orange and Dorado skin (1:2:5-7) And a glaze of Molten Lava. If you feel you need to push the highlights more, you can use the three colour mix again to highlight, but try to not overly do it, we dont want these armor panels to look too shiny.
Wood on the axes handle is just Bootsrap Brown with highlight mix of Plum and Dorado Skin to make it more grey in colour.
The straps are Dorado skin basecoat, Mix of brown and ochre wash and highlight Of skin again.
Skulls are bretty much the same just more yellow in the wash mix and aplied three times. Then highlights with the wash mix+Matt white.
Little string keeping the orcs sorry pants alive are Sacred Scarlet and highlight of the scarlet+Dorado Skin.

There you have it! This took me with the photography and planning about 3 hours. But I feel like this can be squeesed to be 2 hours paint job! So about an evening worth of painting time from primer to a painted orc. You can ofcourse leave out the edgehighlights and the last stiplings. And do a TMM axe to push this to about an 1,5/1 hour paintjob.
Thats all for this first post of Orctober25! Next up is Dramatic lights! I am exited! Are you painting any orc related stuff at this fine hour of life? Please show pictures at the discord! Join the discord if you haven´t yet and I´ll be back soon!
