Contest Overview
Submission Deadline: 11:59pm US Pacific Time Tuesday 31 January 2023
Entry Subject: Any unpainted mini from the Epic Encounters product line made by Steamforged Games.
Entry Requirements:
-
-
- Your submission must include before and after photos of the mini unpainted and painted, with you or a physical label of some sort listing your verifiable preferred social media handle in both pictures. These 2 pictures should be submitted in the Validation Photos section of the entry form and won’t be made public. They will be deleted as soon as the entry is approved.
- You may submit up to 10 contest photos showing your mini from different angles and/or in a diorama with other minis, terrain and props. You must submit at least 1 photo. You may submit your validation photos here as well if you wish them to be included in the public gallery.
- If you submit photos of multiple painted minis, please clearly describe which ones you want to be judged for painting quality in your Entry Description. We understand some minis may be included for theme category consideration or flavor and you may have those excluded from judging for the main prize so you can focus on one really good painting entry.
- Entry must be family-friendly by TTRPG standards.
- See Full Rules for additional details.
-
Judging:
-
-
- Main prizes will be awarded based solely on the painting quality with scores broken down for 50% painting skill, 20% creativity, 20% difficulty of the paint scheme attempted, and 10% presentation (photo quality, angles to show all of the mini, good neutral lighting, etc.)
- Themed category awards are based on the contest photos and their contents, as opposed to the painting quality.
-
Prizes
Winners will be announced by March 6, 2023. Delays shall be communicated on this page if any occur.
Prizes are available in any country that can order from the Steamforged Games web store unless legally prohibited.
Main Prize (3 available):
The top three painting entries will each win one (1) copy of Epic Encounters: Island of the Crab Archon and one (1) copy of Epic Encounters: Cove of the Dragon Turtle, which together constitute the latest release from Epic Encounters!
Themed Categories:
Each winner of a themed category shall receive one (1) unpainted resin mini product of their choice from our three options: Young Kobold Adventurers collection, Veteran Kobold Adventurers collection, or the Harvest Dragon.
The themes are:
1. Most Cinematic We always talk about how cinematic the Epic Encounters adventures are with unique boss actions, interactive terrain, and big story moments. This prize will go to the set of photos that best captures the feel of these cinematic moments. Bust out your creative lighting, dramatic angles, and photography skills, or flex your storytelling muscles with a series of photos that tell the story of a big scene!
2. Most Epic You don’t need to have a flair for the dramatic or great photography skills to capture an epic moment. Show us a scene with minis at your table that would make someone passing by stop and stare.
3. Most Aquatic Let’s celebrate the release of the crab archon and dragon turtle with your best aquatic take on a mini—drowned ghouls, swamp goblins, beach orcs… let’s see how you paint up a new version of our existing minis!
4. Most Surprising Whether you have a new color scheme you’ve been wanting to try out or you have an idea about how to present your Epic Encounters minis that’s off the beaten path, this is the category for those who want to get creative and try something different.
5. Most Minion The big bosses, self-anointed royalty, and spellcasters always get the most attention, but it’s the unappreciated minions who do all the heavy lifting, isn’t it? This prize goes to the best showcase of what it means to be a minion in someone else’s encounter.

If kitbashing or otherwise altering the mini, the mini should remain roughly 75% or more the original mini and be recognizable as the original mini.

Entry must be submitted by 11:59pm US Pacific Time Tuesday 31 January 2022.

Prizes
Three (3) winners will be selected for the Overall Painting Category. These winners each receive the main prizes, which are one (1) copy of Epic Encounters: Island of the Crab Archon and one (1) copy of Epic Encounters: Cove of the Dragon Turtle.
Five (5) winners will be selected for the Themed Categories, one for each theme. These winners each receive one (1) unpainted resin mini set of their choice from three product options: Young Kobold Adventurers collection, Veteran Kobold Adventurers collection, or the Harvest Dragon.
The five themes are:
Judging
A panel of judges selected by The Gallant Goblin and listed on this page shall determine the winners. Judging criteria for the three main prize winners of the overall painting category will be: 50% painting skill, 20% creativity, 20% difficulty, 10% presentation. Other winners will be chosen by a ranked choice poll of the judges.
The entry title and description, as well as submitted photos, will all be used during judging. Poor photo quality may affect judging scores.
Themed category judging is based on the Theme Categories listed in the prior section. The judging will take into account how the mini is painted and presented but the skill of the painting will not be as important as how the overall mini and photos relate to the category.
All judges’ decisions are final.

Contest Entries
The Great Grub
When I saw this mini I knew it was the perfect representation of the final boss of my ongoing D&D campaign: The Great Grub, whos metamorphosis shall herald the apocalypses. The diorama picture represents how I imagine the battle between the party and the Great grub and its spawn when we finally reach the campaigns conclusion.
Swamp Hydra
My first attempt at basing a mini and using an airbrush for the first layer of colours. Love the Godzilla vibe it gives off!
The Red Dragon
This blasted creature kept trying to bite and burn me as I was painting him.
Kobold Priest of Flame
Watch out, Sir Knight!
That Kobold may be small, but their fire magic is fearsome!
A Kobold Fire Priest from Shrine of the Kobold Queen. I based their colouration on that of a Galapagos Lava Lizard for a bit of thematic flair!
Just a little guy
Small crab minion sitting in his little tide pool puddle
The Priest of the Green Flame!
For this entry I wanted to go small but I also wanted to work on my lighting technique. I decided to paint the Priest of the Bloody Flame from the boxset of Shine of the Kobold Queen. However, I painted the flame GREEN!
I really liked the mini and it had a lot of detail so I hope that you like it as well!
Kobold Riding Fire Snake
This mini comes from the Shrine of the Kobold Queen set. I decided to give the snake a striped pattern similar to a coral or milk snake, with blue flames.
Lone frost giant
Had fun trying out nmm for the first (successful) time on this guy
The Queen of Death, Vredha Ozgec! (THEME WINNER: Most Cinematic)
A cackle in the blackness, a ring of bells, and suddenly you’re faced by a peculiar entity of grime and decay. Two freezing eyes stare at you with an ominous horror, and another cackle resonates from its abysmal mouth as if it were a battle cry.
Her skeletal head sits atop a slim body. Undead cower around her presence, the creature seems to take pride in this.
She strides toward you, her legs calmly carry her cadaverous body with a dreadful energy.
Before you is The Queen of Death herself, Vredha Ozgec!
SSSSo Nice you dropped in for Ssssssupper
Classic Snake bosssss
Forest goblin and best froggy friend
Just the small vines vine details on the stone on the base sent my imagination wild. Soon I was sculpting vines everywhere.
Reign of Ice (THEME WINNER: Most Epic)
Frost Orc King’s heart of ice,
In chambers cold, he rules with vice.
His army strong, his rule unbreakable,
Foes fear his presence, his will unstoppable.
But pain lies deep, a tale untold,
His heart cold as winter, but his rule bold.
Kobold!
Cute Lil Kobold!
Behold the Mighty Basilisk Handler!
Go small or go home!
Here we have the Basilisk Handler from the Shrine of the Kobold Queen. He may be little but he has a big personality to keep that Basilisk under control. You have to admire someone whose weapon is meat on a stick!
Scuttler crab (THEME WINNER: Most Aquatic)
We are the pinch that keeps a hero sharp!.. we are the critters that keep a quest moving.
Oh No! One more Goblin appears! Roll! (THEME WINNER: Most Minion)
Hello Gallant Goblin and Epic Encounters! For my entry I decided to shine some light on a minion that is usually overlooked, a Goblin from the Epic Encounter Village of the Goblin Chief!
I do know that the goblins are worshiping a Hydra who is poisoning the forest. Because I that I went with a Jungle Green look and added some purple to represent the toxic aspect of these specific goblins.
This is my entry and I would like to thank you for the opportunity and fun I had while painting this.
Dragon turtles are not to be messed with
Those who dare win! A dragon turtles plunder is always one of great reward should you be brave enough to risk the chance! But beware! If you intend a quick get away the are faster then your ship!
Grimfang Orc Cook
Someone has to make sure that everyone has something to eat.
While the methods are dubious at best and sanitary regulations are practically non-existent, you can’t deny the results – They keep coming for more! (Not that they have much choice).
Painting small miniatures is such a challenge, and this one was particularly gruelling, but I knew I had to paint it from the beginning!
It has so much personality and interesting actions in combat, that I wanted to bring this miniature to life.
The Lich Queen Looking Mean (WINNER: 2nd Place)
She’s dead, but slaying the catwalk in the afterlife.
Trouble
It is much easier to stay out of trouble now, then to get out of trouble later.
-Warren Buffet
It’s getting hot in here (WINNER: 3rd Place)
We already have a frost worm, so let’s even up the field with a magma worm!
The Red Eared Hydra (WINNER: 1st Place)
I wanted to make a color scheme that was both unique and natural. I was inspired by my best bud, a red eared slider named Gamera
SFG Epic Encounters: Temple of the Snake God
Why did it have to be snakes? Because snakes are awesome!
Poor Unfortunately Souls
Fear the sea witch as she waits for your soul in the thames below to make a deal.
Phase Spider Queen
My concept was: What if a Phase Spider grew to monsterous size and became a Queen of a phase spider colony. I always loved the look of the blue and white tones of phase spider and wanted to see what the end evolution of that was.
Tyrant Wasp-spider (THEME WINNER: Most Surprising)
I thought about the most scary spider i’ve seen in real life. So.. there you go! My WASPSPIDER!
